Local Attractions
Whitley Bay enjoys a world-wide reputation as a fun place for old (that's my category) young and young-at-heart (that's my category too). Its residents are passionate about the town and its history as a Victorian seaside resort (actually many of us can remember its hey-day!). The award-winning beach forms part of our heritage coastline and the seafront area is currently undergoing a much-welcomed regeneration programme. The town has a tremendous selection of pubs and restaurants, so whether it's a bracing walk along the seafront munching fish and chips or a sit-down meal in a posh restaurant, there is something for everyone. Shopaholics will enjoy the wide variety of little shops and boutiques in Park View, currently No. 21 in the list of England's best and most interesting high streets. St. Mary's island can be reached between the tides and the iconic lighthouse is now a visitor centre where you can learn about the it's history and about the wildlife of St. Mary's nature reserve. If you climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse, you will be rewarded by spectacular views of the beautiful North East coast.
Tynemouth and Cullercoats
The coastal path is popular with walkers, runners and cyclists and will take you to Cullercoats, with its pretty little bay and the picturesque watch house, and Tynemouth, with its stunning clifftop ruins of the castle and priory, maintained by English Heritage. Tynemouth Longsands is a great beach for surfing and kite flying and there's also a boating lake (where we used to have loads of fun when we were kids and never fell in once) and the fascinating Blue Reef Aquarium (the seahorses are gorgeous!).

Many of our visitors use Whitley Bay as a stepping stone en route to Scotland and head up the A1 unknowingly and without stopping - thus denying themselves the experience of wonderful, beautiful, spectacular, magical Northumberland, my spiritual home.
